How Does A Dental Intraoral Camera Work?

Most intraoral cameras are portable and connects to a computer via a docking station or USB. Usually equipped with LEDs, the dental IOCs can capture images without external lighting.

Because patients don’t always accept treatments that they can’t understand, the dental IOC allows them to see what the dentist sees. Dental problems (such as a fractured tooth) become more pronounced when zoomed in on a computer monitor or TV screen.

At present, due to the improvement of autofocus technology, anyone can easily to take better photos. For the camera lens to automatically adjust to the shutter speed, a series of sensors evaluate the condition. Then it quickly adjust the camera settings to the correct focus.

There are two types of these sensors, active and passive. Active sensors send signals to other parts of the camera. It may require more light or a change in distance from the subject. The passive sensor tells the lens how long the opening of the lens (aperture) must remain open. Basically, the less light available, the longer the aperture remains open, allowing more light to reach the captured image.

In less than a second, the sensor reads all the data about the subject of the photo and transmits it to the camera. Then the camera’s focus distance is slightly changed. The sensor reads the image and sees how much (if any) the focus is. This process is repeated until the focus is clear and all the time spent is shorter than the time to press a button.

However, there are still a problem(camera could not focus) which caused by the following these three factors, even with a dental intra oral camera:

1. light is not enough
2. contrast between the primary subject and the background is not enough
3. moving subject

Therefore, the goal of an autofocus camera has always been to create a camera that focuses as fast as the human eye. The newest generation of intraoral cameras features more sensors.
